Al Taybat International City Museum - Jeddah

The Tayebat Museum, very much like the Al-Tayebat International City Museum for Science and Information, is one of the most illustrated and culturally abundant museums in Saudi Arabia. The museum, which is situated in Jeddah, the ancient entrance to Makkah and a significant port on the Red Sea, provides tourists with a profound traverse through the past of Saudi Arabia, Islam, and the entire world. Tayebat is not just a museum; it is an elaborately constructed heritage city that shelters hundreds of years of identity, tradition, and wisdom.

Historical Background and Founder’s Vision

The Tayebat Museum was established by Sheikh Abdul Raouf Hassan Khalil, a prominent Saudi historian, scholar, and collector. He was a kid when he first got interested in saving cultural heritage. During the next four decades, he made a great number of trips across the Arabian Peninsula and to other countries, collecting rare artifacts, manuscripts, paintings, and even daily objects that represented human civilization.

His dream was to have the history not only kept or shown, but to have the public interact with it. The realization of this vision came when the museum opened its doors in 1999, thus, the transformation of Sheikh’s private collection into a national cultural asset.

Architectural Design: A Heritage City Museum

Tayebat Museum's architecture is one of the most remarkable points of the whole museum. Rather than following a modern-day typical museum arrangement, the whole site is planned to imitate a classic Hijazi town whose buildings mirrored the ones in ancient Jeddah (Al-Balad) with their styles.

Noteworthy architectural aspects comprise:

  • Walls of coral stones and limestones which were widely used in coastal constructions
  • Truly artistically carved wooden "rawasheen" window openings that provide both ventilation and privacy
  • Winding passageways and small courts that are similar to the old Hijazi quarters
  • Ornamental wooden doors, dented windows, and ceilings

Approximately 10,000 square meters is the area of the museum, which consists of 12 buildings, all connected, containing more than 365 exhibition rooms, which by symbolism signify the days of the year. The experience of moving through the museum is like moving through different times of history.
