Piazza della Repubblica is situated at the south-eastern side of the historic center of Rome near Termini Station, the city´s main transport hub. Piazza della Repubblica lies atop the area where the ancient Baths of Diocletian were situated, one of the largest and most magnificent Roman public baths established in the 4th century AD. During the redesign of Rome in the late 19th century after the unification of Italy, the square was fashioned into a semi-circular form that replicated the ancient baths' exedra (curved architectural feature).

At first, it was called Piazza Esedra. The square was renamed Piazza della Repubblica in the 20th century and ever since has been a focal point of urban life in Rome.
